Week 1 — Change Of Season Natural Hair!

Screenshot

Preparing 3C–4C Natural Hair for the Change of Season

There’s something about the changing of the seasons that makes me want to take inventory.

We change our clothes. We put away some of our summer favorites. We pull out the sweaters, boots, scarves, and deeper fall colors.

But what about our hair?

Our natural hair goes through seasonal transitions too. The routine that worked beautifully during the hot, humid days of summer may need a little tweaking as we move into the cooler, drier days of fall.

And if you have followed Crowning Glory Coils and Kinks for a while, you may remember that I have had my share of adventures with natural hair—and yes, quite a few adventures with hair products too! 😂

I went natural in 2010, and one thing I have learned is this:

Natural hair is not something you master once and never have to think about again.

Our hair changes.

Our lifestyles change.

The seasons change.

And as we mature, our hair can change right along with us.

So as we say goodbye to summer, let’s talk about preparing our beautiful 3C, 4A, 4B, and 4C curls, coils, and kinks for fall.

First, Give Your Hair a Fall Checkup

Before running out to buy another product—and I am talking to myself here too!—take a few minutes to really look at your hair.

How does it feel?

After a summer of sun, humidity, swimming, traveling, wash-and-gos, ponytails and other styles, your hair may be telling you exactly what it needs.

Check your ends. Do they feel rough or tangled? Does your hair feel unusually dry? Are you experiencing more breakage than usual? Is your scalp comfortable, or is there buildup?

Sometimes the answer isn’t another product. Sometimes our hair simply needs a good cleansing, deep conditioning, a trim, and a little less manipulation.

Moisture, Moisture…and More Moisture?

We hear the word moisture constantly in the natural-hair community, particularly when we’re talking about Type 4 hair.

But here is something I’ve learned: we don’t necessarily need to keep piling products onto our hair.

Water is the foundation of hydration. Conditioner helps make our strands more manageable, and styling products can help us maintain the style and feel we want between wash days.

As the air becomes cooler and indoor heat starts running, pay attention to how quickly your hair begins to feel dry.

Your fall routine may need to include a richer conditioner or leave-in—but let your hair, rather than the season or social media, tell you what it needs.

My Simple Fall Wash-Day Routine

I want to keep this simple because natural hair care does not have to require twelve products and an entire Saturday!

A good basic routine might include:

  1. Cleanse the scalp and hair. Use a shampoo that cleans effectively without leaving your hair feeling excessively stripped. If you’ve been using lots of gels, oils and creams during the summer, an occasional clarifying wash may be helpful.
  2. Condition and detangle. Work in sections, use plenty of slip, and detangle gently from the ends upward. Our goal isn’t to fight our hair—it’s to work with it.
  3. Deep condition when your hair needs it. If your hair feels especially dry or difficult to manage, this may be a good time for a conditioning treatment.
  4. Apply your leave-in and styler. You don’t necessarily need five layers of products. Start with what your hair needs and what works with the style you’re creating.
  5. Protect your hair at night. A satin bonnet, scarf, or pillowcase can help reduce friction and preserve your style.

And don’t forget those ends! They are the oldest part of our hair and often need the most gentle handling.

Now Let’s Talk Fall Hair!

One of my favorite things about natural hair is its versatility.

We can curl it, coil it, twist it, braid it, stretch it, pin it up or let it stand gloriously toward heaven!

And fall gives us some beautiful styling possibilities.

The Twist-Out is still one of my favorite transitional styles. It gives definition and volume while allowing us to stretch tightly coiled hair without necessarily using direct heat.

Mini Twists are perfect when you want to give yourself a break from daily styling. They can be worn loose, pinned up, pulled back or dressed up with accessories.

A Flat-Twist Updo is especially beautiful for fall. It keeps the ends tucked away and can transition beautifully from everyday wear to church, dinner or a special event. Just remember: protective doesn’t mean tight.

The Afro isn’t going anywhere just because summer is over! A beautifully shaped Afro with a sweater, statement earrings and fall makeup? Yes, ma’am!

And Knotless Braids can be a wonderful longer-lasting option. Fall is also the perfect time to experiment with warm shades such as cinnamon, auburn, chestnut, burgundy and chocolate.

Are You Transitioning From Relaxed to Natural?

I especially want to make room at the table for my sisters who are somewhere between relaxed and natural.

You do not have to do the Big Chop to be considered natural.

If you want to gradually grow your relaxer out and trim your ends over time, that is your journey.

The challenge is that you’re caring for two textures at the same time.

The point where your natural hair meets the relaxed hair—the line of demarcation—can be vulnerable to breakage. Gentle detangling, conditioning and low-manipulation styling become especially important.

Twist-outs, braid-outs, flexi-rod sets, roller sets and flat twists can also help blend the two textures while you’re transitioning.

And There’s Another Transition We Need to Talk About…

There is another hair transition that doesn’t get nearly enough attention:

Natural hair as we mature.

Our hair at 40 may not behave exactly as it did at 25. And our hair at 50, 60, 70 and beyond may introduce us to an entirely new crown.

Gray strands can have a different texture. Density may change. Some women notice increased dryness or thinning. Styles we once loved may no longer suit the way we want to care for our hair.

That doesn’t mean our natural-hair journey is ending.

It means our crown is entering another season.

And I think that’s a conversation worth having here at Crowning Glory.

Before You Buy Another Product…

Now, some of you who remember this blog are probably laughing already.

Because years ago I wrote about getting rid of my product stash.

Oh yes.

The Product Junkie struggle was REAL! 😂

And the natural-hair industry has certainly not stopped giving us beautiful jars, wonderful fragrances, new ingredients and promises that this will finally be THE product!

But this fall, I want us to try something different.

Shop your stash first.

Pull out what you already own. Check expiration or period-after-opening guidance where applicable. Look at what actually worked for your hair—and pay attention to the products you continually push to the back of the cabinet.

Before purchasing something new, ask:

What problem am I trying to solve?

If we can’t answer that question, perhaps we don’t need another jar just yet.

And yes…

I am talking to myself too. 😂

Your Crown, Your Journey

Whether your hair forms loose curls, tiny coils or beautiful zigzag kinks…

Whether your hair reaches your waist or you’re rocking a two-inch TWA…

Whether you’re transitioning from a relaxer, embracing your gray, dealing with shrinkage, rediscovering your hair after years of protective styles, or you’ve been natural for decades…

Your crown doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s crown to be beautiful.

Healthy natural hair isn’t about achieving someone else’s curl pattern.

It’s about learning your hair.

And perhaps that’s what Crowning Glory Coils and Kinks has always been about.

We’re still defining curls.

We’re still celebrating coils.

We’re still embracing kinks.

And we’re still learning.

Welcome back to Crowning Glory. 💗

Until next time, love your curls, embrace your coils, celebrate your kinks—and wear your crown with confidence.

I thought it was time to take at look at trending hair styles for the Year of 2014.  Of course, the more things change, the more they stay the same!  Let’s take a look at some trending styles!

This is a sleek little side do that can be imitated easily by natural hair wearers.  You can also lightly blow dry your natural locks if you want to obtain a more smoother look.

Who doesn’t like a dash of color from time to time.  This young lady has created her own spin on how to ombre your hair with a pick from a color of the rainbow.  There are several ways of achieving this look but if you are not sure on how to do so, you should consult your own colorist or stylist to get the best desired look!  A professional will be best able to steer you in the right way!

A protective style is more your choice?  This is a very stylish side twist and wrapped bun in the back!  For the smoother texture, lightly blow dry or stretch her before attempting this style.  Can also be done on wet hair that has been gel back!

A front top knot is also a winner for 2014.  This attractive style can be worn with a suit, jeans, and a wedding dress!  Simply adorn the hair with a flower, bridal rhinestones or head dress, some pearl bobby pins and this style will change according to the mood and the desire of the wearer.

This style can also be blow dried for a smoother look or you can stretch your hair for more length or wear your textured hair if you like!

This cute bow accents nicely the wearer’s choice of twists that have been swept into an updo!

You are unique.  Therefore, why shouldn’t the beautiful hair on your head express those sentiments.  Natural hair whether it be in its textured state or manipulated is, of course, the choice of the wearer.  However, most of all it is an expression to the world of her uniqueness!

Weave, A Protective Style? Your Kidding Right?

http://www.fabulousnaturalhair.com

I was asked, on Facebook by my friend Carmen, to respond to a blog article called “Opinion:  A Weave is Not a Protective Style; It’s Just A Weave.”  This article or blog was written by Black Girl With Long Hair on July 10, 2013, and garnered some adversarial comments, which was to be expected. I, personally, agreed with the writer and thought it a viable discussion.

best-hair-weave-black-women  At first, I really didn’t give it much thought but the photograph the blogger headed her article with was what really caught my attention.  My friend Carmen had also sent me another Face Book suggestion concerning weaves and severe hair line loss and so I figured I’d jump right into the weave controvesy with this article.

The model has apparently dyed the front of her hair a bright Auburn (left photo) and combed her hair into a similar color-related weave.  What is definitely obvious, with colors like this, is that the tones of hair color and the model’s textures do not match as well as a more natural 2 or 1b hair coloring. Putting this aside, is a weave a protective style.  No, it is not!

However, it does use a protective styling method to accomplish its end goal of

http://blackgirllonghair.com/2013/07/opinion-a-weave-is-not-a-protective-style-its-just-a-weave/

creating an, as natural-looking, weaving style as possible.  This is accomplish by cornrowing the clients hair to create a “smooth” and flat base on which to attach the tracks of hair to the client’s head.

Protective

chimeedwards.com
Adjective

1.  Capable of or intended to protect someone or something.
2.  Having or showing a strong wish to keep someone or something safe from harm.

Synonyms
defensive – preventive

We can readily agree that the information presented is about protective styling and we split off into other factions from there as to what constitutes protective styling.

I found a great definition from the Natural Hair Dictionary.

Protective Hairstyle (Hair Style) – This is a style that requires little manipulation, protects the ends of the hair by keeping them tucked away and allows regular moisturizing. Common styles like twists, coils, flat twists and cornrows can all be converted to protective styles by tucking or hiding the ends.

As many of us know, the natural hair community has been steadily expanding, evolving, and excitingly making change in our social and economic environments.  This is where I first heard the term “protective styling.”  Reason-being that African American hair tends to be dry and needs additional moisture to keep it viable and help to retain length.

         mediumhairstyleupdate.com

In fact, more than likely, if you were to Google the term “protective styling” you will see a woman of color sporting an innovative twist, bun, cornrow, or swank hairstyle.  This technique is used by the different natural hair textures as a way to keep the ends of their natural hair from becoming dried out, raggedy, plagued with single-strand knots, and constantly manipulated by styling combs, braiding, and pulling.

The primary purpose of protective styling for hair is to reduce breakage of your hair so that you can retain hair length.

Naturals, especially, have complaints that the ends of their hair are filled with fabric because their hair is constantly rubbing against their clothes.  Hair getting caught in their jewelry, on chairs, in seatbelts, and suffering from drying episodes from being exposed to the climate or environment.

A few natural hair bloggers have included weaves as a protective hair option.  However, unlike wigs, which can be removed easily and makes your hair accessible for upkeep, and true protective styling, You cannot properly take care of your tresses while hair is “covered” by a weave that is usually worn four to six weeks or longer.  Yes,  the hair can grow like weeds under the weave but what is the state and condition of the hair?  You must also consider the amount of usual hair that has been shed, dirt, expiration and oils that have incurred while hair has been closed in by the weave.

http://www.polyvore.com

Negative Effects of Weave on Tresses

The longer the hair remains under the weave, the looser your hair becomes, allowing room for unnecessary friction to the new growth.  The hair can become “matted” when weaves are left in for long periods.

Moisturizing and maintaining the scalp by applying oils and water can cause the hair to become matted. The “tension” applied when installing weaves can be a great detriment to one’s scalp and roots.  This can cause hair strands to be pulled out by its roots.

We aren’t even talking about the damage that is done to the clients who are long-term weave wearers.

Unfortunately, many women neglect effective care of their hair because the weave allows them the privilege to do so.  Therefore, knocking it off the list of protectve styling.

Weaves Are A Styling Options

Weaves, of any textures, allows the wearer more syling options.  There’s nothing wrong with desiring to wear one’s hair straight and flowing, and experience it flapping in the wind. Or, having spiraling curls cascade downs one’s back! Or to have a bounty of curls that can shame that of a lion!  Undeniably, weaves are convenient, stylish, wearable and fashionable!  However, a protective style, I beg to differ!

Requirements Of A Protective Style

  • It should allow easy and quick access to your scalp to keep it moisturized and clean.
  • You should be able to maintain the hair/style with minimal  fuss and manipulation to your tresses.
  • A Style that is easily covered at night, while sleeping.
  • Allows hair to breathe while keeping the ends tucked in or covered.
  • Effective Protective Styling
Weaves are a wonderful option, when taken care of your hair underneath it, for women of color.  Whether the options are short, curly, or long and flowing, it sets the styling bar for women who even just want to give
their hair a “rest” from a period of manipulation.
Protective Styling, for naturals, is an option that allows women to wear their natural hair while doing their best to protect it from the reality of daily manipulation and the environment.
Weave wearing or protective styling is a choice for the individual wearer and each option needs to be respected. Short, long, curly, or added…hair is our Crown and we should wear it with grace!
As always,  Happy Curls to You!

Shea Moisture Organic Black Soap Purification Masque — In Review

$9.99 for 8 ounces

Shea Moisture Purification Masque

I will start off this review by saying that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this product.  In fact, it was the only product from this line that I tried and liked!I was given this product to try by my natural-haired 4c coworker who simply loved the product herself and is an avid user of the Shea Moisture product line.  Of course, the first thing that I did was to open up the jar and the smell of ripe bananas wafted through the air!  I had wanted to try a bentonite clay treatment but was not looking forward to the mess of having to mix it and then apply it.  This seemed to be a great alternative to that.  The consistency was that of a light custard mix with fine sand, it was shakeable and creamy but thick enough to not swoosh out of the jar.

How I Applied the Masque

I did not cowash my hair before I applied the Shea Moisture Purification Masque.  I was able to simply use my fingers to lift product from the jar and “smooth” onto my hair.  I started out applying the masque on dry, sectioned hair (4) and wasn’t liking the results.  I realized that I had been wearing a wash n’ go, which is what I do 99% of the time.  So, I stopped and dampen my hair with plain water and the application of water under the product immediately smooth out the texture of my hair and dissolved my tangles.

I also realized that using the water under the product allowed me to use much less of the product which yielded great results.  The product simply melted my hair into a smooth, warm butter!

After the application of the masque, I took the extra step of massaging my scalp from front to back and then I covered my head with a plastic cap and since I had applied the product before just going to bed, I kept it on throughout the night.  In the morning, hair was moist and I could easily run my fingers through my 3c-4 type hair.  I then rinsed out the masque and applied my Tresemme Naturals Conditioner as my leave-in.

My Results

I ended up with soft and shiny coils and kinks!  Hair was bouncy and soft to the touch.  There was the faintest smell of the masque, which I liked.

Final Thoughts

I will be purchasing this item again and again!  Loved the fact that I didn’t have to mix up ingredients.  I can find it at my local Target and the price point is good!  The application was easy and I loved the smell of the product.  I feel that it’s not only worth trying but sharing like my coworker shared with me!

Conditioner Only 30-Day Challenge with Tresemme Naturals

$4.86 Walmart/$5.37 Amazon.com for 25 fl. ounces
When I first Big Chopped and had about an all over inch of hair on my head, grooming my tresses was easy and carefree.  At that time, however, I used a lot of gel.  I didn’t mind then because I redid my hair EVERYDAY by jumpimp in the shower, applying my leave-in and then using my hands to smooth through the gel.

As my hair continued to get longer, I realized that I had to change my routine.  I than tried YouTuber MahoghanyCurls method of “only” using her conditioner as a leave-in and “styler.”  My hair grew nicely and continued to retain length.

I then started writing my blog and started trying out different products.  Looking for the “Holy Grail” product that would make my daily routine and regiment simply, easy, and effective.  Until one day I realized that my hair wasn’t retaining the moisture like it had been when I was using the “Only Conditioner” method.

So, I decided to do a 30-day Only Conditioner method.  I started on May 25, 2013, and I will continue until June 25, 2013.  After only a few days, my curls were shiny, bouncy, and lively!

My Regimen

  • Shampoo (no sulfate) or Co-Wash Tresses
  • Apply My Tresemme Naturals Conditioner
  • Section, Detangle, and Comb Through Section
  • Twist Each Section
  • Cover Hair for the Night with a Clear Hair Conditioning Cap
  • Hair is DAMP not DRIPPING wet!
  • In the Morning – Take Cap Off and Unloose Sections and Smooth Hair
  • Allow Hair to Dry While Preparing for Work

Second Day – Third Day:

  • Spritz Hair with PLAIN water
  • Section Hair in Large Quarters
  • Twist Hair
  • Place Cap On Hair for the Night
  • Repeat Morning Routine

Ingredients:
Water; Stearyl Alcohol; Cetyl Alcohol; Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride; Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine; Fragrance; Lauroyl Lysine; Caprylyl Glycol; Brassica Campestris/Aleurites Fordi Oil Copolymer; Aspartic Acid; Distearyldimonium Chloride; Persea Gratissima Oil (Avocado) (USDA Certified Organic Ingredient); Citric Acid; Alcohol; Isopropyl Alcohol; Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (USDA Certified Organic Ingredient)

The TRESemmé Naturals Nourishing Moisture Shampoo & Conditioner system, with natural aloe vera extract and avocado oil, moisturizes your hair to help protect from damage and breakage. Gentle cleansing and lightweight conditioning for hair that will feel healthy, manageable and smooth. Discover 10x stronger hair after just one use.* This natural conditioner has no dyes, is hypoallergenic, silicone-free and safe for color treated hair.
How it Works

The Formulation: This silicone-free conditioner is hypoallergenic, dye-free, safe for colored hair and is infused with Aloe Vera and Avocado extracts, delivering softness, strength and shine.

The Effect: Hair that’s hair 10X stronger–after just one use.* This natural conditioner can protect all hair types from damage and breakage.

Recommended For: Dry Hair. All Hair Types. Straight Hair. Curly Hair. Damage Repair.

**Measured as breakage when combing vs. non-conditioning shampoo.

How to Use

  1. Start with TRESemmé Naturals Nourishing Moisture Shampoo.
  2. First apply an adequate amount from mid-shaft to ends. Work anything that’s left through roots.
  3. Run a wide-tooth comb or fingers from roots to ends to detangle and fully coat hair.
  4. Leave on 2-3 minutes and rinse thoroughly. Finish with your favorite TRESemmé styling aids as needed.

My hair simply LOVES the stuff!  Hair is bouncy and moisturized for the duration, until I rinse out or shampoo and reapply.  The conditioner is light enough not to weigh my 3b-4 hair type down and adds a nice shine without using gel.

Remember to always SMOOTH your product onto every strand to get even coverage and better use of the product.  I found that applying some products on DAMP hair will give you better results.

As always, feel free to leave a comment, picture, or experience in the comment box.
