Week 1 — Change Of Season Natural Hair!

Preparing 3C–4C Natural Hair for the Change of Season

There’s something about the changing of the seasons that makes me want to take inventory.

We change our clothes. We put away some of our summer favorites. We pull out the sweaters, boots, scarves, and deeper fall colors.

But what about our hair?

Our natural hair goes through seasonal transitions too. The routine that worked beautifully during the hot, humid days of summer may need a little tweaking as we move into the cooler, drier days of fall.

And if you have followed Crowning Glory Coils and Kinks for a while, you may remember that I have had my share of adventures with natural hair—and yes, quite a few adventures with hair products too! 😂

I went natural in 2010, and one thing I have learned is this:

Natural hair is not something you master once and never have to think about again.

Our hair changes.

Our lifestyles change.

The seasons change.

And as we mature, our hair can change right along with us.

So as we say goodbye to summer, let’s talk about preparing our beautiful 3C, 4A, 4B, and 4C curls, coils, and kinks for fall.

First, Give Your Hair a Fall Checkup

Before running out to buy another product—and I am talking to myself here too!—take a few minutes to really look at your hair.

How does it feel?

After a summer of sun, humidity, swimming, traveling, wash-and-gos, ponytails and other styles, your hair may be telling you exactly what it needs.

Check your ends. Do they feel rough or tangled? Does your hair feel unusually dry? Are you experiencing more breakage than usual? Is your scalp comfortable, or is there buildup?

Sometimes the answer isn’t another product. Sometimes our hair simply needs a good cleansing, deep conditioning, a trim, and a little less manipulation.

Moisture, Moisture…and More Moisture?

We hear the word moisture constantly in the natural-hair community, particularly when we’re talking about Type 4 hair.

But here is something I’ve learned: we don’t necessarily need to keep piling products onto our hair.

Water is the foundation of hydration. Conditioner helps make our strands more manageable, and styling products can help us maintain the style and feel we want between wash days.

As the air becomes cooler and indoor heat starts running, pay attention to how quickly your hair begins to feel dry.

Your fall routine may need to include a richer conditioner or leave-in—but let your hair, rather than the season or social media, tell you what it needs.

My Simple Fall Wash-Day Routine

I want to keep this simple because natural hair care does not have to require twelve products and an entire Saturday!

A good basic routine might include:

  1. Cleanse the scalp and hair. Use a shampoo that cleans effectively without leaving your hair feeling excessively stripped. If you’ve been using lots of gels, oils and creams during the summer, an occasional clarifying wash may be helpful.
  2. Condition and detangle. Work in sections, use plenty of slip, and detangle gently from the ends upward. Our goal isn’t to fight our hair—it’s to work with it.
  3. Deep condition when your hair needs it. If your hair feels especially dry or difficult to manage, this may be a good time for a conditioning treatment.
  4. Apply your leave-in and styler. You don’t necessarily need five layers of products. Start with what your hair needs and what works with the style you’re creating.
  5. Protect your hair at night. A satin bonnet, scarf, or pillowcase can help reduce friction and preserve your style.

And don’t forget those ends! They are the oldest part of our hair and often need the most gentle handling.

Now Let’s Talk Fall Hair!

One of my favorite things about natural hair is its versatility.

We can curl it, coil it, twist it, braid it, stretch it, pin it up or let it stand gloriously toward heaven!

And fall gives us some beautiful styling possibilities.

The Twist-Out is still one of my favorite transitional styles. It gives definition and volume while allowing us to stretch tightly coiled hair without necessarily using direct heat.

Mini Twists are perfect when you want to give yourself a break from daily styling. They can be worn loose, pinned up, pulled back or dressed up with accessories.

A Flat-Twist Updo is especially beautiful for fall. It keeps the ends tucked away and can transition beautifully from everyday wear to church, dinner or a special event. Just remember: protective doesn’t mean tight.

The Afro isn’t going anywhere just because summer is over! A beautifully shaped Afro with a sweater, statement earrings and fall makeup? Yes, ma’am!

And Knotless Braids can be a wonderful longer-lasting option. Fall is also the perfect time to experiment with warm shades such as cinnamon, auburn, chestnut, burgundy and chocolate.

Are You Transitioning From Relaxed to Natural?

I especially want to make room at the table for my sisters who are somewhere between relaxed and natural.

You do not have to do the Big Chop to be considered natural.

If you want to gradually grow your relaxer out and trim your ends over time, that is your journey.

The challenge is that you’re caring for two textures at the same time.

The point where your natural hair meets the relaxed hair—the line of demarcation—can be vulnerable to breakage. Gentle detangling, conditioning and low-manipulation styling become especially important.

Twist-outs, braid-outs, flexi-rod sets, roller sets and flat twists can also help blend the two textures while you’re transitioning.

And There’s Another Transition We Need to Talk About…

There is another hair transition that doesn’t get nearly enough attention:

Natural hair as we mature.

Our hair at 40 may not behave exactly as it did at 25. And our hair at 50, 60, 70 and beyond may introduce us to an entirely new crown.

Gray strands can have a different texture. Density may change. Some women notice increased dryness or thinning. Styles we once loved may no longer suit the way we want to care for our hair.

That doesn’t mean our natural-hair journey is ending.

It means our crown is entering another season.

And I think that’s a conversation worth having here at Crowning Glory.

Before You Buy Another Product…

Now, some of you who remember this blog are probably laughing already.

Because years ago I wrote about getting rid of my product stash.

Oh yes.

The Product Junkie struggle was REAL! 😂

And the natural-hair industry has certainly not stopped giving us beautiful jars, wonderful fragrances, new ingredients and promises that this will finally be THE product!

But this fall, I want us to try something different.

Shop your stash first.

Pull out what you already own. Check expiration or period-after-opening guidance where applicable. Look at what actually worked for your hair—and pay attention to the products you continually push to the back of the cabinet.

Before purchasing something new, ask:

What problem am I trying to solve?

If we can’t answer that question, perhaps we don’t need another jar just yet.

And yes…

I am talking to myself too. 😂

Your Crown, Your Journey

Whether your hair forms loose curls, tiny coils or beautiful zigzag kinks…

Whether your hair reaches your waist or you’re rocking a two-inch TWA…

Whether you’re transitioning from a relaxer, embracing your gray, dealing with shrinkage, rediscovering your hair after years of protective styles, or you’ve been natural for decades…

Your crown doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s crown to be beautiful.

Healthy natural hair isn’t about achieving someone else’s curl pattern.

It’s about learning your hair.

And perhaps that’s what Crowning Glory Coils and Kinks has always been about.

We’re still defining curls.

We’re still celebrating coils.

We’re still embracing kinks.

And we’re still learning.

Welcome back to Crowning Glory. 💗

Until next time, love your curls, embrace your coils, celebrate your kinks—and wear your crown with confidence.

Getting Rid of My Product Stash

Since I have gone natural, which was in 2010, there has been two things that I am still struggling with: 1. Hands in Hair Syndrone and 2. Being a Product Junkie!

I am still working on keeping my hands out of my hair with little success but I have decided to tackle vice number 2!

My initial path to having a plethora of products was because I was trying to find out what products worked best for my hair, then it was the recommendations of the YouTubers that I was following, and finally there were the suggestions from my natural hair friends! This caused my residence to be overwhelmed with products that I no longer used, half-empty bottles, and items that I didn’t even know that I still had in my stash!

Then I had this weird obsession with, even though I had used the majority of a product except maybe a corner of a product, I wouldn’t throw out the bottle or jar because I thought that I would forget the product if I didn’t have the container to remind me of the product! Oy Vey!

It’s time to pull the extra or unused products and either give them away or throw them away! I dislike clutter and have been pretending not to see the extra stash! One reason that I haven’t thrown product away was because I felt that it was wasteful.

Tonight, I go home and start the purge. I have decide to have no more than three product lines in rotation at one time. Hoping that this will begin the curbing of product junkism!

As always, Until next time, leave a comment and/or a suggestion below!

Aussie Heat Protectant

Price: $4.97

My granddaughter was scheduled to have her hair braided and that put me in search of a heat protectant for her natural hair.

I ended up in Walmart and the first item I saw in the area of heat protectants was Aussie.

I had never used any Aussie products, so this was my first experience with this line. It was the bright purple packaging that really caught my attention. It had a great price point of $4.97 so I took the item to the register and paid for it and took it home.

I really didn’t know what to expect from the product because I haven’t used heat on either of our hair for over a decade.

I section her hair in approximately eight sections and sprayed each section as I blowed dried her hair. It had a light floral fragrance, sprayed easily, and was not too oily.

I was pleased with the outcome of the usage of this product on her 4a, 4b hair. Now, the hair was not bone straight but made her tresses more manageable and the right texture for braiding.

If you would like to share your experience with this product, feel free to leave a comment below.

Rice Water

Does it Work?!

“

Rice water has amazing hair and skin benefits. A recent research has shown that rice water exhibit hair care effects, such as decreasing surface friction and improving hair elasticity. Rice water has inositol, a carbohydrate, that can repair damaged hair, as well as protect it from damage. Specialized imaging technique shows that inositol stays inside the hair even after rinsing, offering continuing hair protection and beautifying effects.

So, Rinsing or washing your hair with rice water has been reported to improve manageability and protect it from future damage. In addition, the amino acids in the rice water strengthen the hair roots, add volume and sheen and make hair silky smooth.” – HairBuddha

So, I took the challenge!

I started by placing an handful of uncooked rice, rinsing it first, in a container with a lid with clean cool water.  I leave it overnight.  You will see that the water is cloudy and if you have not added an orange peel, aloe vera juice or some other agent will you notice a fermented smell.  It really doesn’t bother me because I know that I will be rinsing it after applying it to my tresses.

You can apply the rice water via a bottle with a sprayer, pour from a bottle with a cap, and/or pour from the jar that the rice water fermented in.

I usually wash my hair and rinse it with warm water, then I take the bottle or jar and pour the water down my tresses.  Other times, I will spray my hair with the rice water and then rinse it.  I use the rice water every time I shampoo my hair, which is usually once a week.

What I have noticed has been:

  • Stronger Strands
  • Fewer Fairy and/or Single Strand Knots
  • Shinier Hair
  • Longer Length

I have decided to continue with the rice water because of the noticeable change in my tresses!

Making Peace With Your Hair!

f7438-8cab3062d124ac236c67e0f2d0e76bd5

This is a topic that I have dealt with like many others. From the YouTubers that sport their endorsements to the natural in the office, at one time or another the subject of making peace with one’s natural hair’s texture, porosity, or density becomes a matter of discord for the wearer!

Some natural wearers have come to such a dissatisfication with their hair until it drives them to either go back to the creamy crack or chop off their locks!

If you are like me, I have at least three textures 3b/3c/4 and my hair is fine. So, when I do a wash and go, the first day my hair looks like it has been plastered to my head and several days later my 3c areas have frizzed to a point of an afro!

However, I have one coworker from the time she went natural loved the wildness of her natural hair and sought not to tame it!

I have come to the realization that one must come to peace with the hair that grows from their scalp in order to continue to walk in the freedom of the Big Chop!

You know, when you finally decided to release yourself from the process of transitioning from relaxed hair to natural! For me, it was the most freeing experience, for which I could control. So much so for others that they continue to Big Chop on a regular basis!

Have I come to peace with my hair?…Naw, but I have come to peace that this is what grows out of my scalp and to have peace I must embrace it’s natural expression!

Please leave a comment, your thoughts, and or your experience below.

Until next time!

Fall Natural Hair Routine

beanies 4 natural hair collage3Fall is a season that your tresses will be more prone to dryness from the change in temperature.  During this season you will have more opportunities to handle your hair less by using wigs, braiding of your own tresses,  or a braid and cute slouch hat combo.  Less manipulation of your hair will help you to more easily maintain length and help your hair to grow.

General Hair Care Suggestions for the fall

  • Lessen your usage of sulfate shampoos or extend the days between washing your hair.
  • Cremes and hair butters help your tresses maintain moisture during the cooler months.
  • Leave the moisturizers alone that contain humectants.  Humid, moist air adds moisture, drier air does the opposite.
  • Steam your tresses!   Steaming your hair will give you loads of moisture!
  • Protective Styling —  pin those ends up and keep them tucked away for a much needed rest.

Share your favorite Fall routine below in the comment section.

Look Again!

On yesterday I went to lunch with a coworker and she purchased lunch from a food Image result for look againtruck that sold Schnitzels (a lightly breaded boneless veal, chicken or pork fillet).  I didn’t purchase one but the sandwich look so good that I had decided that I would get one on today.

So, I went out for lunch and decided to take different route to the food truck.  When I reached the destination, the truck wasn’t there.  I knew that sometimes they would change locations depending on what time they reach our location.  I then decided to walk over one block to my right to see if it was there.

I looked at the menus of the different trucks but the thought of the Schnitzel remained with me.  I almost purchased something from the jerk chicken truck but knew that I would not be satisfied, so the search continued.

I thought about the other set of truck WAY over to my left and I made up in my mind that if it wasn’t over there that I probably would either settle for something or not have lunch.

I continued to walk in that direction when I heard my thoughts ramble on to say, “you know that the set of trucks over there are usually of a set order.”  I continued to walk.  As I looked at the lineup of the trucks, my heart sank.  Oh no, all this way for nothing.  But another voice said “look again!”  And sure enough, there was the truck I was looking for!

On picking up my coffee from McDonald’s that morning my receipt number was “171.”  When I placed my Schnitzel order, my receipt was number 17!

My lesson learned was don’t be turned around when you don’t first see what you have been looking for but take another look for it may simply just be somewhere else!

Frizz Not Your Friend?

Combating Friz

Causes of Frizz

  • Dry Hair
  • Product Build-Up
  • Damaged Hair

Dry Hair.  The primary cause or root of frizz is dehydrated hair.  Hair that is dry and thirsty will draw water from the atmosphere and this is the cause of frizz.  So, the primary prevention to keep frizz at bay is “moisturized” tresses. I f your hair is severely damaged, you may need a protein treatment to help control/remedy damage tresses.

Product Build-Up.  Hair that has been previously hydrated and sealed with products like Shea Butter, Silicones, and heavy butters blocks out any moisture to dry hair.  This causes hair to not properly receive the benefits of layering another moisturizer to your tresses.

Damaged Hair.  Hair that is damaged have raise cuticles causing it to be frizzy. This is because your cuticles are “raised” and are no longer “smooth.”  These areas of “raised” cuticles will need a “fill-in” such as protein.  Protein will “fill-in” these gaps and allow hair to become smoother again.

Products:  Product ingredients (because humectants attract moisture to the hair it can cause swelling which causes the hair to dry and frizz. It’s best to use products that contain humectants as leave ins during cooler months).

Hair Manipulation:  Hair in Hair Syndrome is a huge culprit in the cause of frizz for a slew of natural hair wearers.  We cannot keep our hands out of our hair.  This is over manipulation of our tresses and is a culprit of creating frizz!

How to Keep your Tresses Moisturized?

  1. Deep condition your tresses.  Shampoo your tresses to eliminate any product build up and then use a good deep conditioner to rehydrate your hair.
  2. Incorporate styling products into your daily routine that contain  hydrolyzed proteins like hydrolyzed silk, soy and wheat protein that can penetrate the hairs cuticle.

Keeping Frizz at Bay!

Understanding the causes of frizz will help you better choose a regimen to keep frizz at bay.  Products like gel stylers and silicone serums also will help in preventing huge bouts of frizz.

Keep your HANDS out of your hair.  It’s a hard thing to do but your fingers disturbs the curl pattern because the oils and sealants on your strands are pulled away by your touching and manipulation of your strands.  This removes the very products on your hair that you trust to keep your hair shiny, bouncy, and frizz free.

Finally, once you have completed your initial Wash N Go only lightly mist hair!  Hair that hasn’t thoroughly dried and is manipulated is prone to frizz!

How do you combat frizz?  Leave me a comment below!

My Hate/Love Affair With Shea Moisture’s Curling Souffle

13969521The warm weather is upon us and I’ve been experimenting with a new hair routine.  I had been previously using the Shea Moisture Peace Rose Oil Gel and Conditioner.  I liked the product but you have to use the Peace Rose regular Conditioner as a leave-in.  Anyhow, my hair has always loved the Shea Moisture Curling Soufflé Gel and I decided to try it for the warmer season since it is heavy on glycerin, by the way, which my hair simply adores.

My hair needs water at least every three days but in the warmer weather with perspiration and being outdoors more, I really prefer to rinse my hair under the shower nightly (daily).  I find that if I’m just rinsing my hair that the Shea Moisture Curling Soufflé Gel holds up very well unlike other products that tend to breakdown or needs to be reapplied after rinsing.  I also like to “oil rinse” my hair too and this product seems to compliment that regimen well.

I know, I know but that stickiness!  It makes most people feel as though they cannot “touch” their hair.  I really could not understand how Shea Moisture was still producing this product with all the initial complaints of the stickiness, the variation of consistencies from jar to jar, store to store, and seasons.  With all this against it, the product is still on the shelf with the other beloved Shea Moisture products.shea-moisture-curling-souffle-ingredients1

I might just have a solution for you and the reason it is a stable in many naturals routines.  It works!  Hair of various textures and types love the stuff.  I also found this product to “play” well with other natural or non-natural product lines.

I purchased a jar from Walmart, note to self, don’t do that again.  I usually get mines from Walgreen.  This jar of soufflé was set like Jell-O.  I had to literally punch a hole in it.  I struggled through applying to my hair.  The third day, I took a plastic fork and “whipped” the soufflé until it became pliable and looked like beat up Jell-O!  Curls were banging, shiny, and was not drawn up like when I use a regular gel!  My hair was super soft, defined, and touchable.

shea-moisture-curling-souffle-instructions

Here’s a few tips:

  1. Mix a “small” amount of the soufflé to your favorite styler or leave-in for a more touchable and less sticky feel.
  2. “TAP” the surface of the soufflé gel and apply directly to hair.
  3. Use “less” of the product!  Too much will cause excessive stickiness.
  4. Layer the product on in sections to gauge how much each section will need.

Finally, most naturals have attributed the “stickiness” to the agave that is in the product but I will tell you that the product “keeps” my hair “moisturized” for days!  Also, with my 3b -4a hair frizz is par for the course but the soufflé gel gives me ultimate frizz-less hair!  Love the stuff!
