I was amazingly surprised that I’d like this product.  It does, however, have a strong smell but if you like a minty, cool breeze on your scalp — you will easily forget the smell.  The smell isn’t bad but has a mediciney fragrance to it.

 

Product went on smoothly and was creamy.  I would not rate it high in “defining” curls but it most certainly helps your tresses to retain moisture.  This product will give you a “soft” hold, which I prefer.  It is a perfect candidate for those naturals who are using the LOC method (leave-in, Oils, and Creme).  It would fall in the category of the “C” for creme.  Some users have stated that the product helps them to keep the “frizzies” away, which is one of my concerns and it did help with that since it happens to be a “heavy” creme!  So, if you are looking for your hair to be bouncy and light, this is not the product for you!  However, if you live in a more humid climate, this may be a product worth trying.

 

It does not state to be applied to wet hair.  Therefore, it can be placed in the category of second, third-day hair use or as a refresher.  This is a plus for those, unlike me, who don’t want to “wet” their hair everyday!

 

Again, this is one of those products that most people will either “love it!” or “hate it!”  It’s price point is good.  It can be found at some beauty supply stores between $6.99 to $8.99 and is one item in a full hair care line.

Splat is a temporary hair color that can be easily washed out of your hair.  However, those whose hair is bleached may need to wash hair a couple of times to get the color completely out. However, it is an ideal color fix for those who would like to add a flair of color without committing fully to it!

This temporary color can easily be washed off your hands via soap and water but a towel or old shirt should be used when applying this product as you would with any other color product.  This product should also be applied to DRY hair which should make application a smoother process.

Since this product is water soluble, you should cover your hair while out when it is raining!

These are the directions for application:

1. Apply Splat Hair Chalk to dry hair.

2. Select a strip of hair and apply very light mist of hair spray, let dry.

4. Hold the compact lid open in the palm of your hand, the chalk base should be between your 

     thumb and pointer finger.

5. Using your thumb, press hair onto chalk base and slide down hair. Repeat to increase color 

     intensity.

6. Finish with hair spray to set chalk.

Also Included: 1 applicator sponge for part line and braided hair.


The color comes in a compact that is held in the palm of your hand and you glide it along the select strands of hair that you desire.  Most people than spray that section with a little hair spray to give the color an additional amount of “staying” power.  The added benefit is that you can curl, flat iron, and style as usual “without water.”

The general consensus is that the color, once applied is “soft” and its reviews are glowing with praise.

Shea Moisture Organic Black Soap Purification Masque — In Review

Shea Moisture Purification Masque

I will start off this review by saying that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this product.  In fact, it was the only product from this line that I tried and liked!I was given this product to try by my natural-haired 4c coworker who simply loved the product herself and is an avid user of the Shea Moisture product line.  Of course, the first thing that I did was to open up the jar and the smell of ripe bananas wafted through the air!  I had wanted to try a bentonite clay treatment but was not looking forward to the mess of having to mix it and then apply it.  This seemed to be a great alternative to that.  The consistency was that of a light custard mix with fine sand, it was shakeable and creamy but thick enough to not swoosh out of the jar.

How I Applied the Masque

I did not cowash my hair before I applied the Shea Moisture Purification Masque.  I was able to simply use my fingers to lift product from the jar and “smooth” onto my hair.  I started out applying the masque on dry, sectioned hair (4) and wasn’t liking the results.  I realized that I had been wearing a wash n’ go, which is what I do 99% of the time.  So, I stopped and dampen my hair with plain water and the application of water under the product immediately smooth out the texture of my hair and dissolved my tangles.

I also realized that using the water under the product allowed me to use much less of the product which yielded great results.  The product simply melted my hair into a smooth, warm butter!

After the application of the masque, I took the extra step of massaging my scalp from front to back and then I covered my head with a plastic cap and since I had applied the product before just going to bed, I kept it on throughout the night.  In the morning, hair was moist and I could easily run my fingers through my 3c-4 type hair.  I then rinsed out the masque and applied my Tresemme Naturals Conditioner as my leave-in.

My Results

I ended up with soft and shiny coils and kinks!  Hair was bouncy and soft to the touch.  There was the faintest smell of the masque, which I liked.

My Experience:

The Shea Moisture Organic African Black Soap (AFBS) Purification Masque (geesh, what a mouthful!)has been all the rage with many natural hair ladies and after months of continually overlooking the masque, I decided to go ahead and try it.

Final Thoughts

I will be purchasing this item again and again!  Loved the fact that I didn’t have to mix up ingredients.  I can find it at my local Target and the price point is good!  The application was easy and I loved the smell of the product.  I feel that it’s not only worth trying but sharing like my coworker shared with me!

Conditioner Only 30-Day Challenge with Tresemme Naturals

When I first Big Chopped and had about an all over inch of hair on my head, grooming my tresses was easy and carefree.  At that time, however, I used a lot of gel.  I didn’t mind then because I redid my hair EVERYDAY by jumpimp in the shower, applying my leave-in and then using my hands to smooth through the gel.
 
As my hair continued to get longer, I realized that I had to change my routine.  I than tried YouTuber MahoghanyCurls method of “only” using her conditioner as a leave-in and “styler.”  My hair grew nicely and continued to retain length.
 
I then started writing my blog and started trying out different products.  Looking for the “Holy Grail” product that would make my daily routine and regiment simply, easy, and effective.  Until one day I realized that my hair wasn’t retaining the moisture like it had been when I was using the “Only Conditioner” method.  
 
So, I decided to do a 30-day Only Conditioner method.  I started on May 25, 2013, and I will continue until June 25, 2013.  After only a few days, my curls were shiny, bouncy, and lively!

Product Swapping

Can your bathroom cabinet be mistaken for a Walmart, Target, or Walgreens hair product shelf?  That may signify that you have a problem with perusing the hair product shelves once to often!

Who isn’t guilty of that?  Wanting to try out the latest product that has hit the market. Or, a YouTube.com hair guru that has shared another wonderful product that they are using which yielded great results!  There is product temptation all around us!

One of my solutions has been to swap products with a natural haired coworker!  We have different textures of hair.  I’m 3b/c-4 and she is 4a-b.  We discuss with each other what products that we have that hasn’t worked for us and then ask whether the other is interested in trying it out.  We don’t charge each other, it is a free and easy exchange and a way to keep our cabinets from product overload!

My Review:

The funny thing about this review is that I had decided to give some products (a symptom of product junkism and needing products to review) to a co-worker who said “don’t throw them out, bring them to me!”  This product was included in the batch.

However, when I got to work, I decided to revisit the product.  This week I apparently had reached another in between stage and my hair was simply rebelling!  So, I said “let me try this again!”

The problem with this product is that it doesn’t come out of the bottle in a “spray” — it’s too thick — so it SQUIRTS out!  Okay, okay, there is a solution!  I would simply spray the product in my hands then scrunch-in my hair.  However, since the bottle was less then a 1/3 full, I filled it with 2/3 of water and it spayed out of the bottle without a problem.  This worked out fine since the glycerin, if too much is used, can cause the hair to feel sticky and I could “extend” the use of the product that was left.

I sprayed the Lavish Curls onto my hair and because of the glycerin “sprayed” a mist of just plain water over the product.  

Stepped out for lunch.  Curls were a “touch” sticky and I’ll re-mist with plain water.  However, the fact that I already had on my hair:  Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave-In, Oyin’s Whipped Pudding, and Reve’s Lemon-scented Hair and Body Moisturizer — Lavish Curls did its thang — Refreshed the Curls!
Ingredients:

Water, glycerin, polysorbate 80, methylheptyl isostearate, silk amino acids, certified organic anthemis nobilis flower extract, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, certified organic camelllia sinensis leaf extract, citric acid, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, disodium EDTA, potassium sorbate, phenoxyethanol, caprylyl glycol, fragrance

Con:

  • Product SQUIRTS out of the Bottle Instead of Sprays
  • I’ve Seen It Called a “Bi-Racial” Hair Product Line
  • Contains Glycerin (for those who don’t like glycerin in their products)
  • I Would Recommend More for Your 2 to 3c/4 Hair Types
  • Too Much Glycerin Can Make Hair Sticky!
My final thoughts are:

I am thinking about repurchasing and layering it with plain water.  I also realize that some times it pays to “revisit” a product.

As a Side Note:

This is the only line that I found that “sells” a “line” in Target and another on-line.  I’ve read that the Curls, sold in Target may not be 100% organic and may use inferior ingredients to make it “more” affordable to its customers.  I had forgotten about this until referencing the product again.  I then remember that it was for that reason alone that I ordered directly from the Curls site and the product was more.

Terressentials Organic Mud Wash — In Review

I had been toying, for months, with the idea of purchasing the Terressentials Organic Mud Wash for shampooing my hair instead of regular shampoo.

I’ve watched Naptural85’s video on how to use the product, watch a few more videos by other YouTube natural hair gurus, and read some Terressentials Reviews by other natural hair bloggers.  I had been on the Terresentials website http://www.terressentials.com/haircare.html to purchase the product but hated the idea of paying $8.75 for an 8 fl. ounce bottle!

As God answers even the smallest prayer, I have a wonderful co-worker, who happens to be a 4c Natural — Shout out to JASMINE D.  We were talking about different hair products and eventually got on the subject of Terressentials Organic Mud Wash!  She had purchased the 16 fl. ounce bottle of Left Coast Lemon and DIDN’T like it!  I was very surprised because I had heard and read so many glowing reports about the product.

The Friday of that week, she sent me an e-mail asking me to come over to her cubicle.  I went to see what she wanted and she pulled out of her large bag of commodities a bottle of the Terressentials Organic Left Coast Lemon Mud Wash.  There was enough left for about two washes.  I let out a small squeal!  Saturday morning I jumped in the shower and applied the product.

How I Applied the Product

The first attempt to use this product, I did NOT section my hair, as did Naptural85.  I have 3c/4a type tresses that easily stretch out under the water flow of the shower.

I thoroughly soaked my hair with water and began to apply the Terressentials Organic Mud to my tresses.  I concentrated on rubbing the mud into my scalp and down the strands of my tresses.  I used approximately a tablespoon of Mud for this application.

I took about five minutes to thoroughly work the mud throughout my hair and scalp.  I noticed that I could “feel” the mud on my strands and my hair became “extremely” curly but the weight of the mud kept my hair elongated and pleasantly soft.

I thoroughly rinsed my hair under “warm” water and could not believe how soft, elongated, curly, and shiny my hair was!  So much so, I DID NOT need to apply a leave-in conditioner.

Now, this is where Jasmine D. and I differ!  She said that she felt that she “needed to apply a conditioner after the wash.”  I clearly did not and could move on to applying a Styler of my choice.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

There are loads of reviews, blogs, YouTube information on Terressentials Organic Mud Washes.  I love the product and have decided that even though I will continue to co-wash, this will be my Holy Grail Shampoo product hands down — there is NO competition whatsoever.

I would suggest getting the larger bottle 16 fl. ounces for a better shipping rate of $9.75 or go in with a friend and split the shipping costs.

You can also stretch the product by adding water and a “separate” bottle with the mud.  DO NOT ADD WATER TO THE ORIGINAL BOTTLE — per Terressentials!

Shea Moisture Curling Souffle — In Review

I purchased the Curl Souffle from Walgreens while perusing the shelves for another product.  I hadn’t heard much about it but the consistency reminded me of Kinky Curly Curling Custard.  I also read the list of ingredients and they were all “natural” and ingredients that must naturalistas laud over.

I was looking for a “natural” gel that I wouldn’t have to purchase on-line or pay the high price of KCCC.  It seemed like a good product choice and I purchased it with the Walgreens customer card for $8.99.

Product Description:

This all natural styling souffle with agave nectar and flax seed oil defines and promotes curls, with a soft, smooth after feel.  Coconut and flax seed oils nourish and hydrate hair, seal the hair shaft to protest against external pollutants and assist natural oil retention,  The natural humectant complex of agave nectar, coconut oil, glycerin, and shea butter moisturizes, conditions, and boots shine without frizz.

  • Does not contain silicones, polumers, or PVP which could cause build-up and damage hair over time.
  • Ethically trawded ingredients sustainably produced.
  • Sulfate-free and color-safe
  • No Animal Cruelty
Product Usage:
Scoop gel into hands and distribute evenly through cleansed wet or damp hair, following conditioning.  Comb through in sections with detangling comb or hands to shape curls.  Style as desired, allowing some time for drying.  Use on damp hair will result in looser, wavy curls, on wet hair expect riotous curls.  Use on dry hair to minimize fly-aways and frizz.   When using a blow dryer, choose a cool or warm setting.  Use sparingly — this is a very moisturizing product.

My Experience With Product:

I applied the product to wet, conditioned hair.  Product application was difficult because the product is very “gooey.”   The product is thick and sometimes it took several attempts to poke through the top layer and glide just enough product to apply to small sections.
It made my hands feel sticky and oily.  Once I was able to apply the product to hair, I twisted the hair while damp.  It does takes a while before hair dries but once hair was dried, it was well-defined, soft, and shiny.

  • Product is Sticky and Greasy/Oily
  • Too Much of Product Will Cause Hair to Feel Tacky/Sticky 
Will I repurchase product?  I will update this review at a later date.  I’m going to try this product with different leave-ins and styling methods.  Right now I’m wearing my hair in a protective style with the Shea Moisture Curling Souffle on it and will tell you what the take down was like.

Let me preface this review with the following:  this product will not make the Curly Girl Method Holy Grail list!  It’s second product is the demon of hair product ingredients “mineral oil.”

For me, this is NOT a problem!  In fact, my 3b/c curls loves, loves, and let me say it again LOVES mineral oils and silicones!  There, I said it!

I do understand the drying effect that these products can cause when used long-term.  However, I’m a wash n’ goer as my primary go to style and am co-washing tresses every three days and washing with a stronger shampoo every 10 – 12 days to ward off product buildups.

My tresses HATES long-term usage of only natural oils which, for me, caused an on-slaught of Single Strand Knots due to the coiliness of my hair that tends to wrap and tangle.

Product Ingredients:

Water, parafinium liquidum (aka mineral oil), glycerin, triethanolamine, fragrance, carbomer, PEG-12 dimethicone, dipropylene glycol, silk amino acids, aloe barbadensis leaf extract, avocado oil, shea butter, sweet almond oil, jojoba seed oil, macademia seed oil, oleth-05, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, disodium EDTA, DMDM hydantoin, ext. violet 2

How I Used the Product:

I co-washed with Tresemme Moisture Enhancing Conditioner, rinse some out, and applied the Miss Jessie’s Curling Pudding on “extremely” wet hair.  I created 14-sections and twisted my hair, tied-down my hair and went to sleep.  Needless to say, my 3b/3c hair was still damp (I don’t apply heat to my hair). so I re-tied with a scarf, commuted to work, and took down the twists.

RESULTS

Pros:

  • A Little Product Goes A Long Way
  • Product Works Great on Hair Types 2 to 3c’s
  • Light Smell/Fragrance (smells flowery)
  • Love the Lavender Color
  • Shine is Long Lasting
  • Product is Easy to Find in Stores and On-Line
  • Consider an High-End Hair Product
  • Product Line Works Well Together
  • Product Comes In an “Unscented” Version Also
  • Product Does Provide a Strong Hold
  • Will Make Curly Hair Curlier
  • Keeps Hair Moisturized
  • Frizz Kept to a Minimum
  • Can Last Up to Three Months With Proper Usage 
  • Tutorials Are Provided On Use of Miss Jessie’s Products
  • You Can Now Purchase in a 2-ounce jar for $11.99 on Amazon.com

Cons:

  • Price not Reasonable for Average Consumer
  • Can Cause Severe Crunch and Flakes When Too Much Is Used
  • May Not Play Well With All Conditioners and/or Moisturizers
  • Not A Holy Grail Item for “Natural-Products” Naturalistas
  • Most 4b to 4c’s Don’t Have Great Results (However this is a CURL-Enhancing Product!)
  • Using Too Much Will Weigh Hair Down and Make It Tacky/Sticky
  • You Can Find A Cheaper Product — “Let’s Jam” That Can Give You Similar Results

My Final Thoughts:

The product is able to do what the product says that it can in capable hands.  There is a learning curve, but no more than other products that I’ve used.  Looking at my hair now, it has great body and isn’t matted or “glued” together.  Hair is touchable and shiny.  The nature of 3c hair is frizz.  So to be honest, I have some but my common practice is to mist hair by mid-day anyway.

The movability of my tresses are remarkable!  I’m kinda liking this Miss Jessie’s Curling Pudding, even though it pans out to a “small investment!” LOL! 

Will I purchase again!  Definitely!
