Shea Moisture Organic Black Soap Purification Masque — In Review

Shea Moisture Purification Masque

I will start off this review by saying that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this product.  In fact, it was the only product from this line that I tried and liked!I was given this product to try by my natural-haired 4c coworker who simply loved the product herself and is an avid user of the Shea Moisture product line.  Of course, the first thing that I did was to open up the jar and the smell of ripe bananas wafted through the air!  I had wanted to try a bentonite clay treatment but was not looking forward to the mess of having to mix it and then apply it.  This seemed to be a great alternative to that.  The consistency was that of a light custard mix with fine sand, it was shakeable and creamy but thick enough to not swoosh out of the jar.

How I Applied the Masque

I did not cowash my hair before I applied the Shea Moisture Purification Masque.  I was able to simply use my fingers to lift product from the jar and “smooth” onto my hair.  I started out applying the masque on dry, sectioned hair (4) and wasn’t liking the results.  I realized that I had been wearing a wash n’ go, which is what I do 99% of the time.  So, I stopped and dampen my hair with plain water and the application of water under the product immediately smooth out the texture of my hair and dissolved my tangles.

I also realized that using the water under the product allowed me to use much less of the product which yielded great results.  The product simply melted my hair into a smooth, warm butter!

After the application of the masque, I took the extra step of massaging my scalp from front to back and then I covered my head with a plastic cap and since I had applied the product before just going to bed, I kept it on throughout the night.  In the morning, hair was moist and I could easily run my fingers through my 3c-4 type hair.  I then rinsed out the masque and applied my Tresemme Naturals Conditioner as my leave-in.

My Results

I ended up with soft and shiny coils and kinks!  Hair was bouncy and soft to the touch.  There was the faintest smell of the masque, which I liked.

My Experience:

The Shea Moisture Organic African Black Soap (AFBS) Purification Masque (geesh, what a mouthful!)has been all the rage with many natural hair ladies and after months of continually overlooking the masque, I decided to go ahead and try it.

Pros

  • No Mixing of Product
  • Easy to Apply
  • Loved the Smell
  • Product Has a Good Price Point
  • Smells Consistent with Other Products from the Shea Moisture Line
  • Organic and Natural

Cons

  • Some Users DID NOT like the smell 
  • Not Sold at every Walmart and Target

Final Thoughts

I will be purchasing this item again and again!  Loved the fact that I didn’t have to mix up ingredients.  I can find it at my local Target and the price point is good!  The application was easy and I loved the smell of the product.  I feel that it’s not only worth trying but sharing like my coworker shared with me!

Conditioner Only 30-Day Challenge with Tresemme Naturals

When I first Big Chopped and had about an all over inch of hair on my head, grooming my tresses was easy and carefree.  At that time, however, I used a lot of gel.  I didn’t mind then because I redid my hair EVERYDAY by jumpimp in the shower, applying my leave-in and then using my hands to smooth through the gel.
 
As my hair continued to get longer, I realized that I had to change my routine.  I than tried YouTuber MahoghanyCurls method of “only” using her conditioner as a leave-in and “styler.”  My hair grew nicely and continued to retain length.
 
I then started writing my blog and started trying out different products.  Looking for the “Holy Grail” product that would make my daily routine and regiment simply, easy, and effective.  Until one day I realized that my hair wasn’t retaining the moisture like it had been when I was using the “Only Conditioner” method.  
 
So, I decided to do a 30-day Only Conditioner method.  I started on May 25, 2013, and I will continue until June 25, 2013.  After only a few days, my curls were shiny, bouncy, and lively!

My Regimen

  • Shampoo (no sulfate) or Co-Wash Tresses
  • Apply My Tresemme Naturals Conditioner
  • Section, Detangle, and Comb Through Section
  • Twist Each Section
  • Cover Hair for the Night with a Clear Hair Conditioning Cap
  • Hair is DAMP not DRIPPING wet!
  • In the Morning – Take Cap Off and Unloose Sections and Smooth Hair
  • Allow Hair to Dry While Preparing for Work

Second Day – Third Day:

  • Spritz Hair with PLAIN water

How to Use

  2. First apply an adequate amount from mid-shaft to ends. Work anything that’s left through roots.
  3. Run a wide-tooth comb or fingers from roots to ends to detangle and fully coat hair.
  4. Leave on 2-3 minutes and rinse thoroughly. Finish with your favorite TRESemmé styling aids as needed.
 

My hair simply LOVES the stuff!  Hair is bouncy and moisturized for the duration, until I rinse out or shampoo and reapply.  The conditioner is light enough not to weigh my 3b-4 hair type down and adds a nice shine without using gel.

Remember to always SMOOTH your product onto every strand to get even coverage and better use of the product.  I found that applying some products on DAMP hair will give you better results.

Product Swapping

Can your bathroom cabinet be mistaken for a Walmart, Target, or Walgreens hair product shelf?  That may signify that you have a problem with perusing the hair product shelves once to often!

Who isn’t guilty of that?  Wanting to try out the latest product that has hit the market. Or, a YouTube.com hair guru that has shared another wonderful product that they are using which yielded great results!  There is product temptation all around us!

One of my solutions has been to swap products with a natural haired coworker!  We have different textures of hair.  I’m 3b/c-4 and she is 4a-b.  We discuss with each other what products that we have that hasn’t worked for us and then ask whether the other is interested in trying it out.  We don’t charge each other, it is a free and easy exchange and a way to keep our cabinets from product overload!

Miss Jessie’s Curling Pudding

This has been a product that I’ve peruse over the two years that I have been natural but because of its price, avoided.  Well, I finally broke down and purchased a 16 ounce jar for $38.00 at Target.  I must say the shelf was full of Miss Jessie’s products.

 

I washed my hair with Tresemme Naturals Shampoo, followed by Reve Essentials Hair and Body Moisturizer in the Lemon Scent.  I shingled the product through my 3b-4a tresses as usual.  The product went on smoothly and I soon realized that I didn’t need to apply but a dime-size amount to each section. The consistency of the product was very creamy and thick.  The Curly Pudding does have a fragrance that may be too much for some which is why I believe that they do offer it in an unscented version.  I do recommend applying the Curly Pudding to very wet hair, it seems to take less to cover the strands.

 

The clumping that I got with this product was off the chain!  Curls were shiny and bouncy.  The product gives a soft “hold.”  I can foresee a learning curve of three to four tries in order to get your application of this product down pact.  It took about 2 hours for the product to dry without a leave-in under the product.   Today, I used a leave-in and applied the Curly Pudding at 4:30 a.m. and at 10:58 a.m. the ends of my hair are dry but from the scalp to three quarters down my hair is still damp.  Therefore, I have that “just applied product” look and I haven’t been able to “fluff” into style yet.

 

The products ingredients are:  

 

Water, Paraffinum Liquidum, Glycerin, Fragrance, Triethanolamine, Carbomer, PEG-12 Dimethicone, Dipropylene Glycol, Silk Amino Acids, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Avocado Oil, Shea Butter, Sweet Almond Oil, Jojoba Seed Oil, Macadamia Seed Oil, Oleth-5, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Disodium EDTA, DMDM Hydantoin, Ext. Violet 2. 

 

Pros:

  • Goes on smoothly
  • Doesn’t take much to get the job done.
  • Curls are well-defined
  • Curls are Shiny
  • Curls Clump Well
  • Works Well on 2b – 3c Hair Types
  • You Can Get 4 to 5 Day Hair with Product
  • Great for Twistouts and the Like for 4a-z Hair Types
  • Product Gives a Soft, Shiny, and Flexible Hold
  • Frizz-free Curls
  • Style Easily Refreshed with Water

Cons:

  • Product Pricing is a HUGE deterrent to repurchasing product
  • Let’s Jam is a comparable substitute for this high-end product
  • Drying can take hours
  • Product Ingredients are not “embraced” by the “natural” community
  • Not great for wash n goes for 4a-z Hair textures
  • Will Leave Hair Crunchy if you’ve Applied Too Much
  • Artificial “Grape” Scent can be Overwhelming for Some but can last for days

My observation is that people either really love the Curly Pudding or Hate it!  For hair types 2b to 3c it is a good product for Wash N’ Goers and for 4a to 4z great for twistouts, bantu knots and the like.  I’ve used the product twice and haven’t gotten below the top of the label on the 16 ounce jar yet.  Therefore, in order to be fair the initial cost of the product is a shocker but the jar holds a lot of applications that can balance out the price!

 

I also liked the detailed instructions, on the jar, on how to use the product.  From what I’ve heard is that Miss Jessie’s is coming out with a 2-ounce jar  ($7 – $9) that will allow people to try the product without having to shell out so much money.  I would try visiting their site to get one.  Will I be repurchasing?  No, I have a feeling that my jar will last me a long time and I’m satisfied with the Let’s Jam as a substitute.
